Marble Countertops
You have fallen in love with the beauty of marble and you are seriously considering it for your kitchen renovation project. It’s not hard to love marble when the soft veining in Carrera marble or the more distinctive grayish-brown veining in Calacatta marble make you think of the luxurious architecture of ancient times. If you’ve already done some shopping or talked to friends about your idea, you may have noticed a bit of resistance. Even your closest friends may have firmly asked you, “Are you crazy?” It’s true that marble does have its drawbacks, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t proceed. However, there are a few things you should consider first. This handy test can help you determine if marble countertops are right for you:

  • Question #1: Do you see yourself as a perfectionist? Keep in mind that while marble countertops don’t stain easily, they do become etched. When acidic items, such as lemon juice, tomatoes, and vinegar come in contact with marble, the calcium in the stone can become etched. This will give the marble a different appearance when light hits it a certain way. Keeping up with sealing can minimize this from occurring, but if you are the type that cannot fathom any flaw in your counters, marble countertops are probably not your best choice.
  • Question #2: Will you feel like you settled for something less than you wanted? While there are options out there than can look a bit like marble countertops, they really do pale in comparison. If you were to go with something else, will you look at it every day wishing you hadn’t listened to the naysayers? Consider the many marble floors in the world – if they can handle decades and even centuries of foot traffic, marble can surely give your counters lasting beauty as well.
