To Seal or Not to Seal Granite Countertops

When people go to pick out granite countertops for their home, they often wonder if sealing them is necessary and if it is, how often they should do it. Although whether or not you seal your granite countertops largely depends on your lifestyle, it’s usually a better bet to have them sealed. As for how often, again, that will depend on how much you use your granite countertops.

It is not complicated to determine if your granite countertops need sealing. Simply dab some water or mineral oil on them and note of if the area becomes darker. If it does, then the surface is absorbing the liquid. If you can easily wipe up the liquid and there isn’t a color change in the surface, you don’t need to seal your granite countertops quite yet.

If you sealed your countertops recently, pay attention to whether liquids are repelled from the surface. Generally speaking, if the sealant was good quality, you won’t need to seal them again for awhile.

Here at The Granite Guy, we use a granite countertop sealer that can last for up to 15 years, so you have very little maintenance to worry about.
